Remember to reboot to save your changes to the registry. I've found that at least for my Nexus 7 FHD using Camera USB mode instead of MTP proves more stable, e.g. So, to avoid having ADB problems, your best shot is to not use MTP. YAY!!!! Maddeningly annoying issue resolved. AFAIK on most devices before Nexus 7 using the two simultaneously wasn't even an option. Also, your device manager tree will update correctly: Immediately Windows will detect your device and it will ask you what you want to do. Using the SDK Manager helps you keep the driver up to date by notifying you when your current driver is out of. When done, the driver files are downloaded into the androidsdkextrasgoogleusbdriver directory. Click on that, then select “Update Driver Software” then, “Browse my computer for driver software” then, “Let me pick from a list”, then select “MTP USB Device” (not Google Nexus ADB Interface!) The SDK Manager with the Google USB Driver selected. At the top of the tree you will see “ACER Device” and within that “ACER Composite ADB Interface”. (Computer should be connected to Internet) In Windows 7, driver installation will appear like this. As expected, Google has started to roll out Android 4.4 KitKat to its Nexus tablet lineup. After installation, connect your phone to computer and let it automatically search, download and install rest of the drivers. Then go to Control Panel > Device Manager. Download Galaxy Nexus USB Drivers (GSM & Verizon) / (Sprint L700 Galaxy Nexus) and install the drivers package. PLEASE NOTE: If you are a developer and have USB debugging mode turned on, turn it off first or it won’t transfer files at all. When you try to find your Nexus in the device manager it maddeningly shows up as an unknown “ACER” device. You need to transfer photos and files to and from your Nexus but for some reason this process is not seamless with Windows 8.
